What are the five parts of the Compromise of 1850?

A
  • California enters Union as free state
  • Popular sovereignty would decide slavery in other new lands
  • Texas would give up land in exchange for govt. money
  • The Slave Trade, but not slavery, would be banned in Washington, D.C.
  • A stronger and stricter Fugitive Slave Act passed

What were some reactions to the Compromise of 1850?

A

Makes North and South happy but some are still enraged. Abolitionists HATED the fugitive slave law and Southerners were mad about no slavery in Cal. and limited in D.C.

A

Made it a crime to help runaway slaves and allowed them to be arrested even in free states.

A

Senator Stephen Douglas proposed 2 new territories. Each would have popular sovereignty in deciding on slavery. Allowed slavery to expand in the North.

What was Bleeding Kansas?

A

800 pro-slavery fighters burned down an abolitionist town. In response John Brown killed 5 pro-slavery men at Pottawatomie Creek (Pottawatomie massacre).

How did the Republican party form?

A

Many people who opposed slavery began a new party. Abraham Lincoln joined, and at first they were not successful but soon gained power over pro-slavery Democrats.

A

Dred Scott sued his master’s widow claiming he became free when he was taken to a free state.

What were the Dred Scott Case outcomes?

A

The Supreme Court decided:
- That Dred Scott wasn’t a citizen so he had no rights
- That slaves were forever bound to their masters and could only be set free by them
- Any federal laws prohibiting slavery were unconstitutional

A

Abolitionist that believed God wanted him to free slaves and that use of violence to do so was moral.

What was John Brown’s raid?

A

John Brown and his men took over an arsenal in Harper’s Ferry. He tried to start a slave revolt but failed and was captured and executed.

What happened in the Election of 1860?

A

Abraham Lincoln was chosen because he didn’t fully support or oppose slavery. He didn’t try to win any Southern states and won anyway. After his election, Southern states began to secede from the Union.

What was the Confederacy?

A

Southern states seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. Jefferson Davis was their president. Lincoln wouldn’t let them go.
