What was different/important about border states?
Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, and Delaware didn’t join the Confederacy. Loyalties were divided in these states.
What was life like for a soldier?
Northern and Southern soldiers were eager to fight, but they soon learned better. Casualties were high and no medicines to prevent diseases.
Advantages for the North:
- strong, industrial economy
- already organized govt.
- larger population
- better transportation
- many resources
- strong navy
Disadvantages for the North:
- many didn’t want to fight
- many soldiers were untrained and not ready
- fewer good generals
- had to attack and conquer
- overconfident
Advantages for the South:
- strong military, more really good generals
- better trained soldiers
- unified and loyal to the South
- “home field” advantage
- lots of cash
Disadvantages for the South:
- no navy, difficult to trade
- fewer people and resources
- a lot of land to defend
- poor transportation
- overconfident
What were Napoleonic tactics?
Large armies marched directly at one another; high casualties and very bloody.
What were some of the North’s strategies?
- blockade South to ruin their economy and cut them in half by taking Mississippi River –> Anaconda Plan –> bleed the South dry of resources
What were some of the South’s strategies?
- win a few quick battles to discourage North before Confederates ran out of supplies –> offensively-defensive
- gain support of foreign countries to bring supplies
Battle of Fort Sumter:
- South won –> blocked harbor so North couldn’t resupply
- start of the war because Lincoln sends troops in response

First Bull Run/Manassas Battle:
- South won –> took control of confusion when North stopped firing (thought they saw their own)
- South gained confidence
- Union realized it would be harder than they thought
- first rebel yell
- Bull RUN –> Union RAN
Battle of U.S.S. Monitor vs. C.S.S. Virginia:
- neither side won –> both ships were damaged and retreated
- marked the end of wooden ships –> ironclad
- U.S. –> Union Ship
C.S. –> Confederate Ship
Battle of Antietam:
- Union won –> found Confederate plans but moved slowly: South found out and prepared: South fled after losing too many men
- Union wasted opportunity to destroy South once and for all –> war continues
- a for Antietam is red: so is blood: bloodiest war
Battle of Gettysburg:
- Union won –> South was overconfident and they had the high ground
- beginning of the end for the South
- GettysBURG –> iceBURGs are tall –> like a hill –> Union had the high ground/on a hill
Siege of Vicksburg (battle):
- Union won –> South reinforcements never came
- gave North confidence and they got Mississippi
- my-ssissippi OR Union SIEGED the town (I’m Vicky and this is a siege)
Sherman’s March to the Sea (battle):
- Union won –> General Sherman looted and burned his way to a sea port which he also took
- broke the spirit of the Confederacy
- March to the SEA –> water couldn’t douse how much of the South Sherman burned
Appomattox Court House:
- Union won –> South was drained
- war ends
- battle name ends in E for End of the war
Who was Robert E. Lee?
Famous Confederate general.
Who was Ulysses S. Grant?
Famous Union general (especially for his actions when General Lee surrendered)
