What was the Emancipation Proclamation?
A
Abraham Lincoln announced that all Confederate slaves were free: it didn’t do anything because South didn’t listen

Reactions to the Emancipation Proclamation:
A
- some abolitionists were disappointed not all slaves were freed but glad for a 1st step
- border states happy to keep their slaves
- proved Union wanted to end slavery so South fought harder
- British sided with Union

- symbolically showed that Union opposed slavery
- encourage slaves to escape and join Union army –> hurt the South

- General Grant let General Lee keep is sword
- He let many Southerners keep their horses
- He shook hands with Lee
- He promised confederates would NOT be tried for treason
