What was Manifest Destiny?
The popular belief in the U.S. during the 1800s that the country must extend its boundaries to the Pacific Ocean.
What happened at the Alamo?
Mexican troops kill everyone in the Alamo and execute the survivors. Became a battle cry for the Texans: “Remember the Alamo”
Who was Sam Houston?
Led Texans against Santa Anna. Was an erratic, selfless, unpredictable, and confident military leader.
What was the ultimate outcome/winner of the Battle of San Jacinto?
3 independent republics were formed, Santa Anna captured, Texas granted independence, sign of future loss of land for Mexico. Texas won.

President James K Polk wanted to expand the U.S. so he sent a rep. to offer $30 million for California and New Mexico

Polk sent Zachary Taylor to attack first so when Mexico attacked back he persuaded Congress to declare war on Mexico

Sold to U.S. for a lot of money but not a lot of land, but set the final boundary between U.S. and Mexico

Gold found by John Sutter and a friend but the secret gets leaked and people start to come to California

- Too much gold leads to inflation
- California’s population boomed and it became the 31st state
- More mistreatment of Native Americans and immigrants
- Isolation is bad for shipping
