CHAPTER 13 | COGNITIVE FUNCTIONS Flashcards
(18 cards)
Controls speech in most people
Left hemisphere
Better at interpreting emotions, spatial
relationships, and musical ability.
Right hemisphere
Each hemisphere controls and receives input from the
opposite side of the body.
Better at emotional expression and interpreting facial expressions
Right Hemisphere
Difficulty with language
production, especially grammar. (nonfluent)
Broca’s aphasia
Fluent but nonsensical speech, poor comprehension.
Wernicke’s aphasia (fluent):
Difficulty with reading due to phonological
processing and visual attention problems.
Dyslexia
mind and brain are the same thing
monism
- Stimuli can influence behavior without awareness
- Conscious awareness often depends on attention and context
Unconscious Processing
Attention can be guided by
stimuli, expectation, or goals.
: Inattention to one side (usually left) due to
right parietal lobe damage
Spatial neglect
Planning, reasoning.
Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex
Ventromedial prefrontal cortex:
Value and reward assessment
Helps with imagining consequences of actions
Hippocampus
Increases attention to social cues (not “the love hormone”).
Oxytocin
Depends on recognizing others’ emotions (linked to mirror neurons and anterior cingulate cortex).
Empathy
Stronger for those we identify with (ingroup bias)
Altruism
Relies on orbitofrontal and prefrontal
areas.
Social decision-making
