Biopsychosocial model
Three aspects of abnormal behavior: biological, psychological, and sociological
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)
Sets specific criteria for each psychological diagnosis. (standardized definitions and diagnoses book, psychiatrists and psychologists developed)
Personality Disorder
is a maladaptive, inflexible way of dealing with the environment and other people
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
frequent and exaggerated worries
Panic disorder (PD)
Have frequent periods of anxiety and occasional attacks of panic - rapid breathing, increased heart rate, chest pains, sweating, faintness, and trembling.
Hyperventilation
Rapid deep breathing
Agoraphobia
(from agora, the Greek word for “marketplace”) an excessive fear of open or public places
Social phobia
A severe avoidance of other people and a fear of doing anything in public.
Phobia
Is a fear that interferes with normal things.
Systematic Desensitization
A method of reducing fear by gradually exposing people to the object of their fear
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
Have two kinds of problems. An obsession and Compulsion disorder.
Obsession
A repetitive, unwelcome stream of thought.
Compulsion
Is a repetitive, almost irresistible action.
Dependence / Addiction
Unable to quit a self-destructive habit
Physical Dependence
Someone who uses a drug to reduce unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.
Psychological Dependence
Is a strong desire for something without withdrawal symptoms.
Alcoholism
Is the habitual overuse of alcohol
Alcoholism Type 1 (Type A)
Develops gradually over the years, affects about as many women as men, is generally less severe and often occurs in people with no family history of alcoholism.
Alcoholism Type 2 (Type B)
Rapidly, usually by age 25, occurs more often in men than in women, is usually more severe, and shows a stronger genetic basis.
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)
A self-help group of people who are trying to abstain from alcohol use and help others do the same.
Antabuse
Sometimes used in treating alcoholism. Alcoholics who take a daily Antabuse pill become sick if they have a drink.
Methadone
Is sometimes offered as a less dangerous substitute for other opiates. (chemically similar to morphine and heroin, can itself be addictive.)
