Chapter 16-Organic syntheis Flashcards
(10 cards)
what is heating under reflux
it involves vapourisation followed by condensation back to the original container
why use reflux
you can heat reactants safely for long periods without mixture boiling dry
what is distilation used for
to seperate a liquid from a solution or mixture of liquids
can be used to purify a product
it works as their is different boiling points
what happens in distilation
vaporisation followed by condensation to a different container
practice drawing the reflux and distilation device and seating funnel
make sure no holes
its labeled
it has a clear path
and it contains all parts
what is a seprating funnel used for
to remove a layer of mixture carefully so your left with the product
how can acid impurities be removed
adding a sodium carbonate solution and shaking the mixture. this then forms 2 layers. this can be separated off
how do you dry the organic product
by swirling mixture with a drying agent
like an anhydrous salt
this is then decanted
why would you redistilate
if two organic liquids have a very similar boiling point
lastly read through page 96 and 97 to understand synthetic routes and complete questions on page
