Chapter 18 Flashcards
Organisms & their envirments
What is ecology?
the tsudy of organisms in their enviroment
What is a habitat?
the place where an organisms live
What is a community?
all the populations of all the different species in an ecosystem
What is a ecosystem?
a unit containing all the organisms in a community & their enviroment, interacting together
What is a niche?
the role of an organism in its natural enviroment
What is a food chain?
a diagram showing the flow of energy from 1 organism to another
what is a food web?
a network of interconnected food chains
What are the primary producers?
plants
What are the primary consumer?
a grass hopper
What ate the secondary consumer?
the fly catcher
What is a producer(plants)?
an organism that produces its own organic nutrients(using energy from sunlight)
What are consumers(animals)?
an organism that gets energy from feeding on other organisms
What is herbivors?
plant eaters
What is carnivors?
animal eaters
What is a decomposer?
dead or waste organic material eaters
What is a trophic level?
the position of an organism in a food wed/food chain
Why are decomposers so important?
they help to release substances from dead organisms
name the 2 substances that are released by decompers?
1.carbon
2.nitrogen
What are carbon atoms part of ?
the molecules of carbohydrates,fats,proteins
By what is glucose broken down?
plants in respiration
list the process that add carbon dioxide to the air?
respiration by animals & plants
combustion of fossil foils
What is combustion?
the process where fossil fuels are burnedand the carbon in them combines with oxygen
How is carbon dioxide removed from the air?
photsynthesis
How can the rate of growth of a population be affected?
- food supply
2.predation
3.disease
