Where does information in the visual fields go?

A

Info from each visual field goes to the opposite side retina and hemisphere. Ex: info from the right visual field goes to the left retina which connects to the left hemisphere

What is confrontational visual field testing and why is it useful?

A

Used if the patient has damage in their eyes/visual pathways. Helpful to determine if the patient has visual deficits. Patients with Wernicke’s or TCS often have visual deficits.

Define bitemporal hemianopia.

A

Blindness in the lateral visual field for both eyes; occurs if there’s a tumor on the optic chiasm.

A

What is homonymous hemianopia?

A

The same part of the visual field is affected in each eye; patient is blind in contralateral visual half-field

A

About 1/4-1/3 of visual field deficit. It is also called quadrantic hemianopia.
