Chapter 21 Flashcards
(41 cards)
what are the four basic process of the digestive system
digestion, absorption, motility, and secretion
what are the two types of secretion
- transfer of H2O and ions from ECF to lumen
- release of substances synthesized by GI cells
digestion
chemical and mechanical breakdown
absorption
what type of transfer?
active AND passive transfer of substance from lumen into GI tract
motility
movement of material in GI tract
what is the pathway of the digestive system
oral cavity, esophagus, stomach, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, large intestine, and rectum
how many salivary glands are there? what are there names?
3; parotid, submandibular, sublingual
where are the salivary glands located
- parotid: near the ears
- submandibular: sit under the jaw
- sublingual: under the tongue
what does each salivary gland secrete
- parotid: serous fluid containing amylase
- submandibular: serous fluid and mucus with a little bit of amylase
- sublingual: mostly mucus
what are the linings of the small intestine
mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa, and serosa
mucosa
internal to lumen, and main site for digestion and absorption
submucosa
transports nutrients and provides structural support for the mucosa
what are the two parts of the muscularis externa
- circular muscle: inner layer; squeezes and mixes the contents
- longitudinal muscle: outer layer; pushes contents forward
serosa
protection and support
what is added or removed in the lining of the stomach in comparison to the lining of the small intestine
adds an extra layer in the muscularis externa, called the oblique muscle
what is the purpose of the oblique muscle
for churning in the stomach
what are the three phases of the digestive system
cephalic, gastric, and intestinal
cephalic phase
chemical and mechanical digestion begins in mouth
gastric phase
storage, digestion (mechanical and chemical), and protection; begins in stomach
intestinal phase
regulate the flow of chyme
what are the most common cells found in the intestine
goblet cells, Peyer’s Patch, and M cells
Goblet cells secrete ______?
mucus for protection and lubrication
Peyer’s Patch
clusters of lymphoid tissue that monitor intestinal bacteria and antigens
M cells
located above Peyer’s Patches; job is to transport antigens, bacteria and particles to the Peyer’s patches
