Selection
The process of paying attention to a certain stimulus

Physical constructs
Emphasize people’s appearance causing us to notice objective characteristics (height, age, ethnicity, body shape) and subjective characteristics (attractiveness)
Role constructs
Emphasizes people’s social or professional position

Emphasizes people’s behavior (shy, outgoing, agreesive, considerate)
Psychological constructs
Emphasize peoples thoughts and feelings causing us to notice that a person is angry, self-assured, insecure, or carefree

Perceptions
Stereotype
A generalization about a group or category of people that is applied to individual members of that group
Primary effect
The tendency to emphasize the first impression over later impressions when forming a perception
Receny effect
The tendency to emphasize the most recent impression over earlier impressions when forming a perception
Perceptual set
A persons predisposition to perceive only what he or she wants or expects to perceive
Attribution
An explanation for an observed behavior
Locus
Refers to where the cause of a behavior is located (within or outside ourselves)
Stable
A cause that is permanent, semipermanent, or not easily changed
Controllable
Attribution for someone’s behavior when you believe the cause of the behavior was under the persons control
Self-serving bias
The tendency to attribute ones successes to stable internal causes and ones failures to unstable external causes
Fundamental attribution error
The tendency to attribute others behaviors to internal rather than external causes
Self concept
The set of perceptions a person has about who he or she is; also known as identity
Identity
The set of perceptions a person has about who he or she is; also know as self concept

A visual representation of components of the self that are known or unknown to the self and to others
