Chapter 3 Flashcards
(26 cards)
What are the components of the respiratory system (8)?
Nose, mouth, pharynx, trachea, lungs, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli
What percentage of oxygen do we breathe in?
21%
What happens if we do not have enough oxygen intake?
Cells will die
What percentage of oxygen do we use?
6%
What is the difference between signs and symptoms?
Signs are what you see and symptoms are what the patient tells you but you cannot see it
What are some signs and symptoms of respiratory issues?
Abnormal respiratory rate, cyanotic or paleness, cool and clammy skin, abnormal sounds, wheezing/squeaking, inspiration vs expiration, gurgling
Patient is turning blue
Cyanotic
What are the 3 components of the circulatory system?
Blood, blood vessels, heart
What are the 4 chambers of the heart?
Left and right atrium, left and right ventricle
Trace the blood through the heart
Left atrium, left ventricle, body, right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, left ventricle, body
Where is gas exchange occurring?
Alveoli
In the body, where is gas exchange occurring?
Cellular level
Blood vessels that carry blood AWAY from the heart, carry oxygen rich blood, blood spurts
Arteries
Where is there more blood loss: lacerating an artery or lacerating a vein?
Both are the same
Blood vessels that carry blood TO the heart, carry oxygen depleted blood, blood flows in steady stream
Veins
Blood vessels that have a small diameter, no pressure, blood and lymph oozes, oxygen and energy trades for carbon dioxide and waste
Capillaries
How small is a capillary?
Enough so only 1 blood cells can pass through at a time
What are the 4 pulses in arteries?
Carotid, femoral, brachial, radial
Liquid in blood that makes up 90% of the volume
Plasma
How much blood do we have?
12 pints, 6 quarts
Blood cells that carry oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout the body
Red blood cells
Blood cells that fight infections and create pus
White blood cells
Blood cells that help with blood clotting
Platelets
Profuse bleeding
Hemorrhage
