Chapter 3: Ecosystem Processes Flashcards
(32 cards)
What is photosynthesis?
A chemical reaction that takes place in the chloroplasts to produce glucose
What would this equal?
Carbon dioxide + Water =
Oxygen + Glucose
How does carbon dioxide enter a plant?
Through tiny holes
How does a leaf absorb light?
Chlorophyll in the chloroplasts
What do plants need nitrate for?
Growth
What to plants need phosphate for?
Healthy roots
What do plants need potassium for?
Healthy leaves and flowers
What do plants need magnesium for?
Making chlorophyll
If a plant is suffering from a mineral deficiency how can farmers help?
They can add fertilisers to add missing minerals to the soil
How is having lots of green chlorophyll an adaptation for photosynthesis?
As it helps the leaf absorb sunlight
How is the leaf being thin an adaptation for photosynthesis
It allows gases to diffuse in and out of the leaf
What is aerobic respiration?
Respiration with oxygen, that uses glucose for energy
Where does respiration occur?
In the mitochondria of cells to transfer energy
Where is glucose absorbed?
From the small intestine into the blood plasma, where it is then transported to cells to be diffused
How is oxygen carried to the cells where it is then diffused?
Haemoglobin
What is anaerobic respiration
Respiration without oxygen, it turns glucose into lactic acid
True or False. Anaerobic respiration transfers more energy than aerobic
False, it transfer less
Can lactic acid cause muscle cramps?
Yes, this causes increased inhalation to break down lactic acid
What are food chains?
Something that shows the transfer of energy between organisms
What are food webs?
Something that shows how lots of food chains are connected in an ecosystem
What is a herbivore?
A type of consumer that only eats vegetables/the producer
What is a producer?
Green plants/algae that makes its own food
What is the apex predator?
The last link in the food chain
What is a carnivore?
A type of consumer that only eats other animals/meat
