Chapter 3: Metals and Acids Flashcards
(22 cards)
What happens when a metal reacts with an acid?
It produces a salt and hydrogen gas
What do all acid compounds have in them?
Hydrogen
What is a compound called when the hydrogen is replaced by a metal?
A salt
What will react with cold water to produce a metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas?
Very reactive metals
What is an example of a metal that will only react with steam, and produce a metal oxide and hydrogen?
Magnesium
What are the three main acids?
Hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid and nitric acid
What would the outcome of this be?
Copper + Hydrochloric Acid
Copper Chloride + Hydrogen
How can the gas produced when reacting a metal and a salt be collected?
In an upturned test tube
How do you check if the gas is hydrogen?
If you insert a lit splint into an upturned test tube, if the gas is hydrogen, there will be a ‘pop’ sound
How is metal oxide produced?
Metals reacting with oxygen
How does gold react to oxygen?
There is no reaction
How does magnesium react to oxygen?
It burns vigorously
How does lead and copper react to oxygen?
It does not burn, but when heated it forms a layer of oxide on the surface
What is a displacement reaction?
When a more reactive element takes the place of a less reactive element in a compound
True or False? The less reactive metals will become compounds
False, the more reactive metals will become compounds
What are the top 3 most reactive elements on the reactivity series?
Potassium, sodium and lithium
What are the least reactive elements on the reactivity series?
Gold, silver and copper
What do symbol equations have in them?
Letters in brackets after each substance
In symbol equations what does (s) mean?
Solid
In symbol equations what does (l) mean?
Liquid
In symbol equations what does (g) mean?
Gas
In symbol equations what does (aq)
Dissolved in water
