CHAPTER 5! Flashcards
(23 cards)
Consciousness includes 4 components
-Awareness of external events
-Awareness of internal sensations
-Awareness of the self as a unique being experiencing these events
-Awareness of thoughts about the experience
Freud’s beliefs about consciousness
First to suggest we have an unconscious
Measuring variations of consciousness has historically been done by a:
electroencephalogram (EEG)
(doctor heard by patient while under anesthesia)
Brainwave activity is divided into four different bands
Beta, Alpha, Theta, Delta
Beta
Which are correlated with ALERTNESS and problem-solving
Alpha
which are correlated to resting and relaxing
Theta
Correlated with low alertness and light sleep
Delta
Which is correlated with deep sleep.
Humans and animals operate on a 24-hour biological cycle called…
Circadian Rhythm: Alertness, body temp, hromone secretion
What regulates these rhythms
light
The onset of sleep is gradual with the average being 25 minutes. NREM consists of 4 stages:
STAGE 1: Thera waves, begin the process
STAGE 2: Slower brain waves activity, little sleep spindles
3 & 4: Slow-wave sleep
(CYCLE REVERSESN BACK TILL YOU REACH STAGE 1, then YOU HT REM SLEEP)
REM SLEEP
-Like 5th stage
-Minimum bodily movement
-Beta waves occur (due to dreaming)
Sleep Deprivation
3-4 days without sleep, Impaired attention, lower reaction time, cognitive speed slows, moto coordination and decision making hindered
Sleep Deprivation can lead to what health issues?
Insomnia
Occurs in 3 different patterns
Trouble sleeping struggles to remain asleep and often wakes up
Somnambulism
Sleepwalking or talking
Common effects of hypnosis
Hallucinations, doing things you normally wouldn’t do,
Meditation
Mental exercises try to alter consciousness levels.
The physiological effects of meditation include
-Decrease heart rate
-Brain waves relax
-can improve stress and anxiety
Psychoactive drugs
drugs that modify mental, emotional, behavioral, and functioning
Physical dependance
occurs when a lack of drugs leads to withdrawals making individual dependent on drugs to function.
Psychologica dependence
occurs when a person must continue to take drugs to satisfy intense mental cravings
