Chapter 5 Flashcards
(36 cards)
Function of skeletal system
- supports body -protects soft organs -storage of minerals & fats
- blood cell formation -movement due to attached skeletal muscles
Characteristics of compact vs spongy bone
Compact-homogenous Spongy-small needle like pieces of bone & many open spaces
4 Types of bone
Long, short, flat, irregular
Long bone
-Long vs wide -contain mostly compact bone -femur -humerus
Short bone
-Cube shaped -contain mostly spongy bone -carpals -tarsals
Flat bones
-Thing and flattened -curved -thin layers of compact bone around a layer of spongy bone -skull -ribs -sternum
Irregular bones
-Irregular shape -do not fit into any other category -vertebrae -hip
Long bone anatomy
Diaphysis -shaft (compact)
Epiphysis- ends of bone (spongy)
Central (haversian) canal- carries blood vessels & nerves
Lacunae- cavities containing osteocytes arranged in concentric rings
Bone remodeling/healing steps
Hematoma formation
Fibrocartilage callus
Bony callus
Bone remodeling
Closed/simple fracture
Break does not go through skin
Open/compound fracture
Broken bone goes through skin
