1
Bathymetry
is the study of the seafloor topography through mapping.
2
Isobaths
Variations in depth are known as isobaths or depth contours. Ever since ships have been used in and around harbors, there has been a need to know the depth of water.
3
Hydrography
which measures features in the ocean as well as the properties of water itself (currents, tides, and waves), has its basis in bathymetry.
4
String and a lead plumb
Early ocean surveyors used a string and a lead plumb or anything that can be lowered into the water to determine the depth.
5
Sonar
(sound navigation and ranging) uses pulses of sound to determine the depth of water below a ship.
