What are emotions?
Feeling or affect; in infancy- communication is central part of emotion (classifying emotions: positive/negative)
Biological influences: universal (certain brain regions)
Environmental influences: display rules (Shiraev & Levy); where, when, how should be expressed (culturally based)
What are emotions babies have?
Babies have 3 cries: basic cry (hunger?), angry cry, pain cry (parents can distinguish)
Basic emotions are biologically predetermined- emerges @ same time globally.
Reflexive smile: no external stimulus; social smile: familiar face

What are influences on emotional regulation?
Actions and contexts of caregiver; soothing infant: develop sense of trust/secure attachment
What’s the Erikson dilemmas?
1st yr: Trust vs. Mistrust (importance of sensitive, responsive, consistent care; “will you feed me when I’m hungry?”)
2nd yr: Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt (independence develops, feels pride in accomplishments
