Q

atria

A

the two upper chambers of the heart. Right receives unoxygenated blood from body. Left receives oxygenated blood from lungs

Q

Ventricles

A

two lower chambers of the heart. Right sends O2 poor blood to lungs. Left sends O2 rich blood to the whole body

Q

Venae cavae

A

Two major veins that return blood from the body to right atrium. Superior vena cava returns blood from upper body & head. Inferior vena cava returns blood from everything inferior to the heart

16
Q

Posterior tibial artery

A

artery supplying the foot, behind the medial ankle

17
Q

dorsalis pedis artery

A

artery supplying the foot, lateral to the large tendon of the big toe

18
Q

arteriole

A

smallest kind of artery

19
Q

capillaries

A

thin walled microscopic blood vessels. Where O2/CO2 & nutrient/waste exchange takes place within the body’s cells

20
Q

Venule

A

smallest kind of vein

21
Q

vein

A

any blood vessel returning blood to the heart

22
Q

Pulmonary Vein

A

vessel that carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium

23
Q

plasma

A

fluid portion of the blood. About 50% of your blood

24
Q

Red blood cells

A

Carry oxygen to and carbon dioxide away from the cells

25
White blood cells
produce substances that help fight body infections
26
Platelets
Membrane-enclosed fragments of specialized cells. Help form blood clots
27
Pulse
rhythmic beats caused as waves of blood move through and expand the arteries
28
Peripheral pulses
radial, brachial, posterior tibial, & dorsalis pedis pulses. Can be felt at peripheral points of body
29
Central pulses
Carotid and femoral pulses. Can be felt in central part of the body.
30
Blood pressure
pressure caused by blood exerting force against the walls of blood vessels. Has two parts Systolic BP & Diastolic BP 120/80
31
Systolic BP
pressure in the arteries when the left ventricle contracts and pushes blood out
32
Diastolic BP
pressure in the arteries when the left ventricle is refilling
33
perfusion
supply of O2 and nutrients and removal of wastes from the cells and tissues of body. Happens as a result of blood flow through capillaries
34
Hypoperfusion
AKA shock. When body cannot adequately circulate blood to bodys cells to deliver O2, nutrients & remove waste. Life threatening condition
