Chapter 6: Cardiovascular System Flashcards
(34 cards)
Cardiovascular system
system made up of the heart and blood vessels. Also called circulatory system
atria
the two upper chambers of the heart. Right receives unoxygenated blood from body. Left receives oxygenated blood from lungs
Ventricles
two lower chambers of the heart. Right sends O2 poor blood to lungs. Left sends O2 rich blood to the whole body
Venae cavae
Two major veins that return blood from the body to right atrium. Superior vena cava returns blood from upper body & head. Inferior vena cava returns blood from everything inferior to the heart
Valve
structure that opens and closes to permit the flow of a fluid in only one direction
Where are there valves in the cardiovascular system?
Between each atrium & ventricle.
Pulmonary Artery
Aorta
Cardiac conduction System
specialized muscle tissues that conducts electrical impulses that stimulate the heart to beat
Artery
any blood vessel carrying blood away from the heart
coronary arteries
blood vessels that supply blood to the muscle of the heart (myocardium)
aorta
largest artery in the body. transports blood from the left ventricle to begin systemic circulation
Pulmonary artery
vessel that carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs
carotid arteries
large neck arteries, one on each side of the neck. Carry blood from heart to head
Femoral artery
major artery supplying the leg
brachial artery
artery of the upper arm; where you check the pulse of an infant CPR
radial artery
arty of the lower arm; used when taking the pulse at wrist
Posterior tibial artery
artery supplying the foot, behind the medial ankle
dorsalis pedis artery
artery supplying the foot, lateral to the large tendon of the big toe
arteriole
smallest kind of artery
capillaries
thin walled microscopic blood vessels. Where O2/CO2 & nutrient/waste exchange takes place within the body’s cells
Venule
smallest kind of vein
vein
any blood vessel returning blood to the heart
Pulmonary Vein
vessel that carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium
plasma
fluid portion of the blood. About 50% of your blood
Red blood cells
Carry oxygen to and carbon dioxide away from the cells
