chapter 6 Chemical Reactions Jacob Cheatum Flashcards
(24 cards)
What is a product ?
A product is the result of a chemical reaction .
What is a Reactant ?
A substance or molecule that is in a chemical reaction .
What is chemical energy?
Chemical energy is what is released when a compound reacts with others to form new compounds .
What is an exothermic reaction ?
A chemical reaction that releases heat to the surroundings . An example is in a isooctane -oxygen reaction because more energy is released as the products form to break the bonds in the reactants .
What is an endothermic reaction ?
Is a reaction that must have heat to take place . Example - hydrated barium hydroxide combined with ammonium nitrate in a flask .
Synthesis reaction
A reaction that requires two or more substances combine to make a new compound .
Decomposition reaction
Is when a compound is broke down to form two or more simple substances .
Electrolysis -
The process that a electric current is used to make a chemical reaction , such as the decomposition of water .
Combustion reaction
Is the oxidation of an organic compound and when this happens heat is released .
Single displacement reaction
Is when one of the elements in a compound is replaced by another .
Double replacement reaction
Is when a reaction happens and the positive and negitive ions of the reactants switch places .
Oxidation reduction reaction
Is a chemical reaction in which the oxidation number of a molecule , atom , or ion changes by loosing or gaining electrons .
Radical
A atomic or molecular species that has unpaired electrons .
Reduced
The gaining of electrons
Oxidized
To bond chemically with oxygen
Chemical equation
Is the representation of chemical reactions
Mole ratio
Compares the moles of one substance to the amount of miles to another substance .
Coefficient
The number in front of a variable
Law of conservation of mass
States that mass can not be created or destroyed
Law of definite proportions
States the a chemical compound always contains the exact same proportion of elements .
Catalyst
Increases the rate of a reaction without it going any major changes
Enzyme
Can produce a biochemical reaction .
Substrate
A substance or layer that is under something happening .
Chemical equal Librium
Is when the state in both reactants are present and have no farther tendency to change .
