Chapter Seven Solutions Flashcards
(24 cards)
Colloid
A mixture that consist of tiny particles that are intermediate in size between those in solutions and the ones in suspensions and the ones that are in a liquid , solid , or gas .
Emulsion
Want mixture made up of two or more immiscible liquids in which one liquid is dispersed by another .
Solution
A homogenous mixture of two or more substances that are uniformly dispersed throughout a single phase .
Solute
Is the substance that dissolves in the solvent .
Solvent
The substance that the solute dissolves in
Alloy
Is a solid or a liquid mixture of two or more metals .
Hydrogen bonding
Intermolecular force that occurs when a hydrogen atom that is bonded to a highly electronegative atom of one molecule is attracted to two unshared electrons of another molecule .
Heterogeneous mixture
The amounts of each thing are not equal .
Homogeneous mixture
The amounts of each thing are equal .
Decanting
The process of pouring a lighter liquid off of a heavier liquid
Immiscible
Do not mix
Tyndall effect
The scattering of light
Polar compound
A compound that has uneven distribution of electrons e
Nonpolar compound
The compound has even distribution of electrons
Solubility
The highest amount of a solute that will dissolve in a given quantity of solvent at a given temperature and pressure .
Concentration
The amount of a particular substance in a given quantity of a mixture .
Unsaturated solution
Wa solution that contains less solute than a saturated solution .
Saturated solution
Solution that can not dissolve any more solute
Supersaturated solution
A solution that contains more dissolved solute that is needed to reach a equilibrium
Molarity
An expression of the concentration of the solution in moles of dissolved solute per liter
Insoluble
Unable to dissolve
Soluble
Can be dissolved
Dilute
When a substance is weakened
Suspension
A mixture in which particles are dispersed .
