States of matter Jacob Cheatum Flashcards
(27 cards)
What is a liquid ?
A liquid can change its shape to the container it is in , but it can not change the volume on its own.
What is a solid ?
A solid is a object that has a definite shape and volume .
What is a gas ?
Gases are free to move in all directions .
What is plasma ?
A state of matter that starts as a gas and then becomes ionized .
What is energy ?
The ability to do work.
What is thermal energy ?
The kinetic energy of a substances atoms .
What is evaporation ?
Evaporation is when a liquid becomes a gas .
What is sublimation?
The process when a solid turns into a gas .
What is condensation ?
When a gas turns into a liquid .
What is a crystalline solid ?
They have a specific arrangement of atoms or molecules .
What is a Amorphous solid ?
Are solids that have no specific order of atoms or molecules .
What is surface tension ?
Is the force acting on the surfaces of liquids that causes liquids to make drops of the liquid .
What is kinetic energy ?
Kinetic energy is what you are measuring when you measure temperature so it is a measure of things in movement .
What is heat?
It is what causes the temperature of things or matter to change .
What is endothermic change ?
Changes such as melted or other changes that require energy .
What is a exoteric change ?
Is a change that does not require energy to change .
What is a fluid ?
Is a non solid state of matter which the atoms or molecules are free to move wherever they need to .
What is buoyant force ?
The force that is put on a object that is floating in water .
What is pressure ?
The amount of force exerted per unit of a surface .
What are Archimedes principles ?
States that the force acting on a floating object is equal to the weight of the volume of fluid the object displaces .
What is a pascal ?
Is the SI unit for pressure .
What are pascals principles ?
The fluid in equilibrium that is in a vessel exerts a pressure of equal intensities in all directions .
What is viscosity?
Is a liquids resistance to flow .
What is Bernoullis principle ?
As the speed of a moving liquid increases the pressure exerted on it is decreased .
