Qualitative Research Approach
Subjective paradigm (beliefs)
- Reality is socially constructed and context dependent
- There are multiple realities (There are similarities and differences in every persons experience)
Emic View
Researcher enters the world of the study participants
- The view of the person experiencing the phenomenon
INSIDERS VIEW
Understanding the Emic View
Recruit key informants
- Use quotes from participants
- Insiders view
Etic View
Outsiders view
- Obtained through quantitative analysis of behavior
Phenomenological
a qualitative approach that aims to explore and understand how individuals experience a particular phenomenon.
Grounded theory
qualitative research methodology aimed at developing a theory grounded in data collected from participants. Unlike other methods that test existing theories,
- grounded theory seeks to generate new theories
Ethnography
qualitative research method focused on studying people and cultures in their natural settings. It aims to understand the social practices, behaviors, beliefs, and interactions of a group from the insider’s (emic) perspective.
Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR)
collaborative research method that involves community members and researchers working together throughout the entire research process. It emphasizes equity, co-learning, and mutual benefit, aiming to address issues that are important and relevant to the community.
- Leads to an intervention
Case Study Research
Focuses on a selected phenomenon over a short or long period of time to provide an in-depth description of its essential dimensions and processes
Mixed Methods
Use of both qualitative and quantitative methods in one study
Meta Summary
Summary analysis of group of qualitative studies with thematic summaries or surveys data
Addresses the frequency of evidence replication (akin to validity in quantitative studies)
Meta Synthesis
Interpretive synthesis of a group of qualitative studies with description or explanatory data
Attempts provide a description of the phenomenon while retaining the essence of each study
Rigor
quality of the research process
Creditability
Are the results validated by participants?
Auditability
Does the researcher document the research process?
Fittingness
Are the results meaningful to nursing?
