CHAPTER 7 (Nutritional disease) Flashcards
(9 cards)
in swine, particularly piglets, is a common issue due to their rapid growth and limited iron stores at birth.
Iron deficiency, or iron deficiency anemia,
This deficiency can lead to various health problems, including paleness, weakness, and potentially even death.
Iron Deficiency
is a nutritional disease of young, rapidly growing pigs—usually affecting those between 2 to 4 months of age. It is acute, often fatal, and typically related to Vitamin E and/or Selenium deficiency.
Mulberry Heart Disease (MHD)
These nutrients are antioxidants that protect cells (especially heart and liver) from oxidative damage.
Vitamin E
Selenium
Vitamin E and Selenium deficiency leads to;
Capillary fragility
Muscle degeneration
Hemorrhage
is a nutritional disorder most commonly seen in young pigs, especially weaners, and is best known for causing a skin condition called parakeratosis.
Zinc deficiency
Its clinical Signs often sudden death is the first and only sign in well-conditioned, fast-growing piglets.
Mulberry Heart Disease
Causes of Iron Deficiency
- Rapid growth
- Indoor rearing
What is the cause of death if you observed this before death:
* Labored breathing
* Weakness
* Fever
* Reluctance to move
* Cyanosis (bluish skin)
* Death within a few hours
