Chapter 7 - Single-Factor Experimental Designs Flashcards
(10 cards)
Single-Factor Experimental Designs
Study designs with only one independent variable.
Types of Single-Factor Designs
- Independent groups 1-factor design
- Matched groups 1-factor design
- Ex post facto 1-factor design
- Repeated measures 1-factor design
Nonlinear Effects
Effects that don’t follow a straight line. Can only be found with 3 or more levels of the IV.
Post-Hoc Tests
Determine exactly which condition is significantly different from others (Tukey’s HSD).
Independent Groups (Standard) t-test/ANOVA
Any design where groups don’t depend on each other.
Dependent groups t-test/ANOVA
When the groups or conditions depend on one another (matched groups design, repeated-measures design, etc).
Placebo Control Group
A control group led to believe they’re receiving a treatment when they’re not. Used when knowledge of treatment may influence behavior as well as the placebo effect.
Placebo Effect
When there’s beneficial effects from a placebo (due to psychological effects from knowing one is receiving treatment).
Wait List Control Group
A control group that doesn’t receive treatment during the study but will be given equivalent treatment after the study has ended. Used when treatment and control group are experiencing the same condition. Also used when it would be unethical to withhold treatment and treatment is relatively short.
Yoked Control Group
A control group that receives an equal amount of a particular treatment. Occurs because each control group member is “yoked” to an experimental group member. Used when the treatment group controls how long they’re in a treatment or which treatments they complete.
