Chapter 9 Flashcards
(9 cards)
Cellular respiration
The catabolic pathways that breaks down organic fuel to produce atp with the assistance of ETC
Aerobic respiration
Degrades organic molecules to yield ATP
Uses ETC and O2 as final electron receptor
Anaerobic Respiration
Utilizes ETC but the final electron receptor is not O
Glycolysis
Aerobic respiration
Breaks down glucose into 2 molecules of pyruvate
Occurs in the cytoplasm. —2 major phases——
—energy investment. — energy pay off
Initial cascade
Krebs Cycle/ Citric acid cycle
Completes the break down of pyruvate to CO2
Oxidizes organic fuel from pyruvate— generating 1 ATP
8 steps-each specific enzyme
Coenzyme Acetyl COAq
The transport of pyruvate into the mitochondrion
Electron Transport Chain / ETC
Integral; protiens embedded in inner membrane (cristae) of mitochondria
Protiens accept electrons from H
NADH and FADH donate electron to the ETC
Oxidation
Substances loses electrons
Redox
Substance gains electrons (amount of positive charge is reduced)
Fermentation
Lacking ETC
Uses substrate level phosphorylation to generate ATP
Final electron acceptor is pyruvate- glucose is not completely oxidized
3 products of fermentation
Alcohol
Gas
Acid
