Nation
A nation is found in the feelings and minds of people and is an internal connection to others
Collective Identity
As sense of belonging with others based around similarities like religion, ethnicity, etc.
Linguistic nation
When people are connected by their languages which influence how they view the world around them (Francophones)
Ethnic Nation
People who share the same ethnic characteristics can connect through their sense of pride and loyalty to their heritage (Ukrainians living in Calgary)

Connection developed around the understandings of ones place in the world and ideas about how the group should live (Jewish communities)

Physical landscapes that force people to develop a sense of connectedness
Political Nation
Composed of self-determination and sovereignty
Self-determination
Refers to the desire to have power to control one’s own affairs. Most of the time this applies to nations.
Nation-State
A territory with internationally recognized boundaries and a government. Nation states are considered sovereign because they have the right to govern independently
Sovereignty
The political authority to control ones own affairs. This power is reserved for nation-states.
Nationalism
A shared sense of belonging, or a shared consciousness of collective identity
Civic Nation
A nation based on shared laws that are chosen by citizens who want to live according to their similar political practices and values. Civic= politics and citizenship

What was the Canadian Pacific Railway?
It connected eastern Canada to western Canada and allowed for trade and travel across the country

A Canadian battle that was fought in the midst of World War I. This is where all four Canadian divisions fought to capture a ridge protected by German forces. This helped grow Canadian nationalism and built a sense of brotherhood and a reputation of resiliency

This happened during the D-Day invasion of World War II. Over 15,000 Canadian soldiers fought to secure the landing
What are some reasons for Indigenous Assimilation?
-European immigration caused Canadian and Indigenous government groups to have tension
-The post confederation Canadian government adopted a policy of assimilation toward the Indigenous and wanted them to be absorbed into Canadian culture
