Circulatory System P5 Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
Function
A
- Main transportation system for our body:
1. Digested Food, Oxygen and Water to parts of body where they’re needed
2. Carbon Dioxide and Waste Materials away from organs for removal
2
Q
Heart
A
- Muscular organ with four chambers that lies between our two lungs and protected by our rib cage
- Heart muscle contracts and relaxes continuously to pump blood around the body
3
Q
Blood Vessels
A
- Tubes that transport blood
- Arteries are the thickest blood vessels and transported blood rich in oxygen, away from the heart
- Veins transport blood rich in carbon dioxide, towards the heart
- Capillaries are the thinnest blood vessels and surround organs to facilitate substance exchange
4
Q
Flow of Blood
A
- Oxygenated Blood: Lungs —> Heart —> Other Parts of the Body
- Deoxygenated Blood: Other Parts of the Body —> Heart —> Lungs
5
Q
Heart Rate
A
- Average healthy adult has a heart rate of about 60-100 beats per minute (bpm)
- When we exercise, our heart pumps faster because our body needs more digested food and oxygen (different from lungs)
