Respiratory System P5 Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
Function of the Whole System
A
Breathing
1. Inhalation: Breathing In = Air rich in oxygen taken in
2. Exhalation: Breathing Out = Air rich in carbon dioxide forced out of lungs
2
Q
Function of Nose
A
- Air enters our body through the nostrils
- Nose passages are warm and moist
- Fine hairs and mucus act as filters that help to trap dust in the air
3
Q
Function of Windpipe
A
- Windpipe branches into air tubes and both transport air to and from the lungs
4
Q
Function of Lungs
A
- Our lungs are protected by the rib cage and sit on the diaphragm.
- In the lungs, the air tubes end in air sacs, which have large surface areas that allow for the exchange of gases.
- Each air sac is surrounded by numerous tiny blood vessels.
- At the air sacs, oxygen enters the blood and carbon dioxide leaves the blood
5
Q
Breathing Rate
A
- Measured as the number of times we breathe within one minute
- When we exercise, our breathing rate increases because we need to take in more oxygen and remove carbon dioxide produced more quickly
- Breathing rate affected by how vigorous the exercise is, a person’s age and health condition
