How to structure essay
- Subversion of class in nature
- Chivalric in the midst of chaos and order
- Rise of the lower class and danger
Subversion of class through nature
BOATSWAIN: “What cares these roarers for the name of the king?”
Imperatives “take (…) tend (…) blow (…) keep (…) down (…) lower”
They all speak in prose - equal in the face of malign nature
Sebastian - “a pox o’ your throat, you bawling, blasphemous, incharitable dog” - reductive language, makes Sebastian seem of a lower class
Antonio - “whoreson insolent noise-maker” - idiotic, insulting the only man trying to save them
Proper language between Miranda and prospero right after the tempest and Ariel as well
“My dearest father”
“I have done nothing but in care of thee, my dear one, thee, my daughter, who art ignorant of what thou art” - image of gender heiracrchy and age again, form of restraint.
Both speak in verse, upper class
Prospero calls her “thy” and Miranda calls him “you”
“All hail, great master, grave sir, hail!’ And “fine apparition! My quaint Ariel” vs “thou poisonous slave”
“Ay, sir” - Ariel to prospero
Chivalric code
Ferdinand (pseudosonnet):
“Admiration (…) dearest (…) best (…) so perfect and so peerless”
“Sports are painful, and their labours delight (…) poor(…) rich”
“My sweet mistress”, “O most dear mistress”, “No, precious creature”
“Beyond all limit (…) love, prize honour you”
Miranda
“Work not so hard (…) pray now, rest yourself” - submission competition
“I am your wife if you will marry me; If not, I’ll die your maid”
“Sweet lord you play me false”
Rise of the lower class
- repetition of “monster” - found someone below them finally
STEFANO “Kneel and repeat it” to caliban
CALIBAN: “brain (…) batter his skull (…) paunch (…) cut”
STEFANO: “Monster, I will kill this man”
Caliban in verse:
“Be not afeard (…) be patient (…) be quiet (…) no noise (…) let it alone, thou fool; it is but trash.”
