Symbolic capital and symbolic violence
Schools have middle class habitus and pupils who have been socialised into this at home gain symbolic capital and are deemed to have worth or value. School devalues that wc habitus as worthless causing symbolic violence which reproduced the class structure and keeps the wc in their place. Wc feel they need to change how they talked and behaved in order to do well in education
Nike identities
Symbolic violence has led pupils to seek alternative ways of self worth and status. This is done by investing heavily in styles and brands. Style performances are heavily policed by peer groups and not conforming was social suicide. This conducted with schools middle class habitus dress code and was labelled bad taste. This stigmatises the wc identity causing them to self exclude from education
Working class identity and educational success
Some wc pupils want to succeed and ingrams study found that wc indentities were inseparable from belonging to a wc area as it give them an intense feeling of belonging because of the connection to the neighbourhood through families and friends. This was a key part of the boys habitus. The wc students felt they had to abandon their identity to fit in
