Ethicic Out Of School Factors Flashcards
(8 cards)
Material deprivation
Pakistanis and Bangladeshis are 3x more likely than white to be poor and homeless. And unemployment is three times higher. This material deprivation may be due to a lack of language skills or racial discrimination. Indian pupils from better off backgrounds are more likely to succeed in education and go to private school.
Evaluation of material deprivation
The government have introduced bursaries and free school meals to tackle this problem so everyone has an equal advantage in education
Cultural deprivation
Black families are headed by a lone mother and deprived of adequate care. As the father enforces diciime and the correct masculine values the boys are incorrectly socialised and then become inadequate parents themselves.
Evaluation of cultural deprivation
This view is ethnocentric as just becuase other cultures are different does not mean they are inferior and cause failings in the education system
Attitudes and values
Black children are not socialised into the mainstream culture and value immediate gratification rather than working for long time success. This view does not value education. This means they do not work hard in school to go to university and instead to on to work manual labour jobs.
Evaluation of attitudes and values
This is generalisation as not all black children are incorrectly socialised.
Intellectual and linguistic skills
The language spoken by low income black students is ungrammatical, disjointed. And incapable of expressing abstract ideas. Due to speaking in restricted code they lack skills needed for essay writing in exams and coursework.
Evaluation of intellectual and linguistic skills
Teacher labelling may be a more significant cause of black students underachieving as teachers hold racialised views and expectations of how ems should act.
