Class Out Of School Factors Flashcards
(16 cards)
Poor housing
Inadequate space means there is nowhere for a child to concentrate and complete homework. Mold and damp can also cause illness leading to absence. Low income means the problem can’t be fixed. Miss more school= fail exams.
Evaluation for poor housing
The education system now provide after school clubs and achievement centres where students have safe spaces to revise and work.
Poor diet and health (Howard)
WC students cannot afford nutritional meals and lack energy, vitamins and minerals. This weakens the immune system causing them to miss school and fall behind and fail exams
Evaluation of poor diet and health
Schools now offer breakfast clubs and free school meals which offer nutrition and vitamins
Poor finances
Mc mothers are more likely to buy educational toys to stimulate intellectual development at an early age. Wc mothers cannot afford this or computers. This means the mc students do better in education than the wc
Evaluation of poor finances
Education now offers bursaries to students to help pay for all educational needs, free computers and travel money
Lack of Parental interest (Douglas)
Wc parents have a lack of interest in their children’s education. Study showed that mc parents were more likely to attend school events and parents evenings than wc parents. This means the wc students don’t care about their education either.
Evaluation of lack of parental interest
Douglas study is based on parents evening however some ex parents may have to work during this time or just feel uncomfortable in the mc environment
Parents education (Feinstein)
Parents own education determines how they socialise their child into the concept of education. Mc parents are stricter and have higher expectations whereas wc parents don’t discipline their children.
Evaluation of parents education
Education programmes such as sure start help those who may be culturally deprived and improve their skills and attitudes needed for educational success
Values and attitudes (sugarman)
Mc want occupations offer continual advancement careers and invest money and time. This is called deferred gratification. The wc want instant gratification so they seek manual labour jobs which offer no promotion but do not need good exam results and pay immediately
Evaluation of attitudes and values
Sugarmans conclusions are based off questionnaires which are not accurate or representative
Cultural capital (Bourdieu)
The knowledge, attitudes, values, language, tastes, and abilities of the mc can be exchanged for educational success. Mc children have cultural capital and can afford private tutoring or school. This means they will do better in exams
Evaluation of cultural capital
Cultural derivation is a myth and is victim blaming. Wc kids are culturally different not culturally deprived.
