Labelling and the self fulfilling prophecy

A

When the teacher forms and impression of a pupil and the pupil is labelled as a troublemaker by a teacher who interprets their behaviour as deviant. The pupil then becomes aware of the teachers label and their self-concept beings to change. The pupil then starts living up to their labels and commits more deviant acts.

Students can always self-negate the prophecy like in fullers study of ex black girls who were labelled as deviant.

Setting and streaming (ball)

A

In a comprehensive school the students were set into three band from most to least able, these were based on non-academic factors. Those whose fathers were non manual workers had more chance of being in the top band and seen as hardworking. The wc we’re put at a disadvantage

This is outdated and sets are no longer based on fathers occupation but rather how achieving the student is

The a-c economy (hill born and youdell)

A

League tables have created an a-c economy where schools only focus on the MC who have the ability to achieve a C or over and those who don’t (WC) are labelled as hopeless cases and placed into bottom sets giving them so chance of being able to get better

A

Functionalists would argue that education is meritocratic and students who are placed in bottom sets simply do not put in the ability and effort to achieve a C
