Classification Of Organisms Flashcards
(9 cards)
what is phylogeny
The study of evolutionary history of groups of organisms
- Tells us who’s related to human and how closely they are
What does the phylogenetic tree show?
that all organisms have evolved from shared common ancestors
What is taxonomy?
The science of classification
How many levels of classification are there?
Eight
What is each group of classification called?
A taxon
name the eight groups of classification from largest to smallest
Domain
Kingdom
Phylum
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Species
As you moved down the hierarchy of classification to the organisms become more or less closely related
More closely related
Species definition
A group of similar organisms able to reproduce to give fertile offspring
Courtship behaviour can be used to help classify species
- Courtship behaviour is carried out by organisms to attract a mate of the right species
- It can be simple such as releasing chemicals or complex such as a series of displays
- Courtship behaviour is species specific
- The most closely related species are the most similar their courtship behaviour
