Guard Break 1

Stand with sleeve grip

A

From Closed Guard Top

Posture up and get a grip on their sleeve. The perfect time to do this is just after they’ve put a hand in your collar. Break their grip and just keep your sleeve grip on their hand. Bring that hand to their belly and pin it in position across their body…

Block their hip with your other hand…

Stand up, be sure to step first with the foot on the same side as their trapped hand…

Once you’ve stood all the way up, switch your sleeve grip to the other hand so that you have a cross grip on their arm…

Use your free hand to push down on their leg and break open their guard…

Use the knee on the side where your free hand is it pin that leg to the ground…

Either back step to pass or pass your sleeve gripping hand around their non-pinned leg and bring it up to your shoulder to smash pass on the other side…

Guard Break 2

Windshield wiper

A

From Closed Guard Top

Posture up and get a grip on both their collars. Keep the other arm on their hip with the elbow in. Blade our body so that your collar gripping hand is forward and the knee on that side is closer to their hips than your other knee

Stand up using the leg closest to them. Step forward with the foot towards their head to increase the angle of your body relative to theirs. You want your leg to be past their hip line. Their leg should be trapped between the elbow of the arm gripping the collar and the knee of the standing leg…

Windshield wiper your knee out on the other side and use that to stand up at an angle to them. This should break the guard. If it doesn’t, grab the pants at the hip and push down on their leg to break

Use your free hand to push down on their leg and break open their guard…

Guard Break 3

Two on one knee

A

Pin both hands to their chest or get your hands in their armpits if their hands are back. Do not attempt this if they have a collar grip…

Shift your weight onto your hands and jump up to your feet. Let go with your hands and stand all the way up…

Reach across your body to control their knee on the opposite side. Use the hand on that side to reach behind you and between their crossed feet. Use this hand to break open their guard and pass…

One common counter for the bottom person is to grab your ankles and push you back after you’ve stood up. Be ready for this and step forward and out of their grips if they grab the ankles.

Q

Double Under Hooks Pass

A

Push down one knee as if you’re going for a torreando pass…

Swim your other hand under the far leg and bring it onto your shoulder. Put pressure into them with that shoulder.

Defeat the triangle by swimming the hand that was pushing their leg down under that leg. You don’t need to connect your hands or load that leg onto your shoulder, just have your hand under the leg for protection…

Stack them using the leg on your shoulder. Grab a cross collar grip if you can to increase the pressure…

When you’re ready, turn your hips and shrug the leg on your shoulder past your head to pass…

Q

Marcelo No Gi Standing guard break

A

If they are stronger than you and keep breaking your posture down. Put both hands in their sternum to create a frame and push up to regain posture…

Once you have a good posture, get control of the opponents armpits and pin their arms down…

Step up with one foot on whichever side you feel most comfortable. Get to the other foot by simply straightening the leg. This leg will be well back and will ensure that you’ve body is bladed away and that they can’t grab your ankle…

Once you’re standing move both hands from the armpits to the sternum again and put pressure down to maintain a good base. This is also a way to climb up his body into a better position. The tricep of your bottom hand should come into contact with his leg and isolate that leg between the elbow and the leg you initially stepped with.

Pass your top hand to the inside of their knee opposite their pinned leg and push that knee down to the mat, maintaining your base/ position with the other limbs. They will now have one leg down and the other up and isolated by your leg and arm…

Bring your hips back to put pressure on the knee and really pin it. You should be able to do a push up on it…

From here bring your cross side knee around and pin their leg to knee slide pass. Use the post on your hands and back leg to make the cross side leg light.

You can also swim under their elevated leg for the double under pass, or do a back step pass by pinning their leg with your same side knee and controlling the head.

Q

Triangle escapes

A

Stage 1
Posture up right away and lift their hips off the floor…

Slide your knees under their butt to keep their hips elevated…

From there you can climb their leg and break the triangle or sid all the way down on your butt and put your feet in their arm pits to break the triangle…

Elevate a leg and pass…

Stage 3
They have the triangle locked up and they are going to finish the move…

Stuff your trapped arm under their choking leg and grab it with your other hand…

Turn into the choking leg and sprawl. Putting all your weight on your “in” shoulder.

Drop your hips and keep turning into an omoplata type position until your free…
