Back Control Top Flashcards

Q

RNC attack sequence

A

Starting from the seatbelt grip…

Go right for the waterfall/ choke once you have the position, don’t wait to see which hand they grab, that’s letting them set the pace…
The choke and waterfall will provide a lot of control by itself. You can always return to harness grip if needed…

You have your choking hand covered by your underhooking hand. Make a fist with your choking hand so that they can’t grab your fingers…
If they strip your underhooking hand off, just go for the choke by sliding your choking arm across their neck…

If they have their hands on the choking arm, take your underhooking hand and swim it over their near wrist. Pull that wrist into them and don’t let them stretch out their arm. Go right for the choke. They will still have a hand on your choking arm so it will be your arm against that one hand/ grip. Pull your arm out of the underhook position (let go of their wrist) and use the palm of that hand to strip their grips on your choking arm. Work the choke back into position until you can sink the choke…

You can also keep the grip on their wrist and pull the choking arm out and away from their one free hand. Bring the arm back in and run your knuckle under their mandible and across their neck to get under their chin and sink the choke. If they prevent this by grabbing your arm, just pull it out again and attack again. Even if the chin is tucked this should work. Be sure to keep a hold of their wrist on the other side as you do this. Once you have the choke across and your wrist is safe behind their neck you can pull the underhooking arm out to finish the choke

Key Detail
When you get your choking arm across their neck, a common mistake is to leave too much space between their neck and your wrist. If they grab your wrist on the choking arm you’ve lost the choke. Tuck your hand on the choking arm behind their head as much as possible so that they can’t grab your wrist and pull it out.

Once you have wrist control you can straight arm and pass your leg over their arm to trap it. Your knee has to be over their elbow for this to work. Pull your underhooking arm out and you’ll have a two on one against their remaining hand. If you do this and then threaten the choke, they may be distracted, this give you a chance to move their arm/ wrist behind them, trap it with your knee and they’ll be stuck with you having the two on one.

Q

Back retention

A

From back mount top…

They bridge into you and get their head and shoulders to the mat. They are trying to walk their hips away…
Let them walk their hips away and maintain your seatbelt grip…

Flip your remaining hook to the outside of their leg and use it to push them off your trapped leg. Push into them to keep them on their side and facing away from you…

Slide your top knee up along their spine, sit them up and over to retake back mount on the other side…

This works on either side but is harder if they are escaping to your underhook side because they will be trapping your underhook beneath their ribs. On this side sliding your leg very high up on their back is crucial to having the leverage to sit them up.

If they free one leg and are bridging into you and trying to walk the hips out but are not quite there…
You can always take your newly freed leg, post it up by your butt and shrimp under them to switch your hips and ruin their escape. Put the hook back in to re-establish back control

Arm Bar From Back- Transition back to the back

A

From back mount with harness grip…

Use the hand on your choking arm to gain control of the wrist on the arm you are under hooking. Keep the harness grip and you’ll have a kimura grip on the wrist…

Put your foot on the their hip and fall towards their trapped arm. Think of bringing your head to their knee as you fall to the side. Keep your foot on their hip to keep them from turning towards you and pass your other leg across their stomach, holding them tightly…

Pass your choking arm over their head while keeping the figure 4 grip on the arm…

Once both your arms are on the same side of their head, use your forearm as a frame to push their face away from you. Pass your leg over their head and lay them down onto their back to finish the arm bar…

Tip:
If they try to escape by falling towards the under hook…
put your opposite foot in their hip and turn so that your leg is across their stomach and their arm/ shoulder is on your chest. You are between them and the mat…

Finish as above from step 3.
If they try to slip down to escape back mount and you have the harness…
Get a figure 4 grip on their under hooked arm and bring your leg across their belly for the arm bar.

Alternate one arm RNC Finish
If you get the point in the arm bar above where you’ve fallen to your side but have not moved your arms to the other side of their head. They are making the arm bar difficult and are defending effectively…

Switch your grips so that your choking arm is now free. Keep control of the arm with a new grip…

With your choking arm now free, bump your wrist against the chin and pry the chin up using a can opener motion. As the chin is forced up, sink in the RNC and walk your arm back towards the back of the opponents shoulder as deep as you can…

Put your head firmly against theirs to immobilize them and squeeze with your arm and head to finish the one arm RNC…

You can also feed your choking hand into the space between your heads and grab your own neck. Lean and look towards them to finish…

Q

Weakside triple threat

A

You/ they fall to the weak side…

Put your foot in the hip and get your hips slightly perpendicular to them. Your near side hook should be across their belly. Keep your head between their head and the mat. Curl into them and control their bottom wrist with your under hooking hand.

From this off-center position. You have 3 attacks.

  1. Bow and arrow choke
Use your choking hand to grab their gi near their neck pull it across for the bow and arrow.
They defend the bow and arrow by grabbing your wrist and pulling. Really sell the choke to get them to pull really hard…Once they are committed., straighten the arm and use it to push their hand away from their neck and towards your foot on their pelvis… Trap their arm using your leg and then pull your arm out. You now have two hands to their one.
Swim your thumb under the chin for the choke, either a bow and arrow or a one hand RNC…
  2. Arm-Bar
If you’re going for the choke and they are either too low or getting their arm out or the angle is wrong… Switch to the armbar by pushing their head away and dominating their arm with your under hooking hand…Keep your near hook high on their body to prevent them from catching your foot in their legs…
Bring the far leg over their head and hit their face with your hamstring. Lay them down for the arm bar…
  3. Triangle
They are defending the arm bar by grabbing their hand and you can’t get your far leg over their face…They will be rigid in this position.
Stretch your legs out and bring them down to the mat…
Use the under hooking hand to grab the ankle on your far leg…
Take the leg that was draping their body and put it behind their spine. Use your grip on the ankle to control them. Use your foot as a post to turn so that your calf is on their artery…
figure 4 with the posted leg and push the head to finish…

Q

Cross side control

A

When u are on the back. The classic back control with two hooks is okay but not great…

Instead, go for cross side control.

Head to their ear…
Waterfall grip on one hand and a hook on the opposite leg…

This will make it very difficult to for them to turn…

You lock this position down further by crossing your feet behind their trapped hip, using a figure 4 behinf the hip or stacking your feet on the hip…

You can switch hands or feet as needed as long as you maintain the cross side control.

The main attack from here is the choke…

Q

Zach Lange RNC attack sequence

A

You have the back and your arm is across their neck. Their chin is tucked and they are defending by trying to grab your arm.

Use your fingers to walk the choking hand back across their shoulder. Put your free hand on top of the choking hand. Keep it open and use it to defend and attempts to grab and strip the choke…

Use your free hand to push their shoulder forward as you walk the choking hand further back. You can do this like stephen kesting using a gable grip or just push it with your palm. Push quickly several times to ruin their alignment and make space for the choke…

Once the choking hand is back in a good position. Put the elbow of the free arm over the attacking arm. Karate chop straight down behind their head to get into position…

Finally, bring the choking hand around to your bicep for the final position to finish the move.

Tighten the choke and bring your choking elbow towards their far shoulder and away from your other arm to finish
