(19 cards)
Definition
Soil born, spore forming, importance in farm animals and humans
The different species have different tropism:
1.Neurotropic Clostridia = CNS - (Cl. tetani and Cl. botulinum)
The different species have different tropism:
- Histotoxic clostridia = skeletal muscle - (Cl. chauvoei, CLsepticum, Cl.novyi, Cl. haemolyticum, Cl. sordellii and Cl. perfringens type A)
The different species have different tropism:
- Clostridia that produce Enterotoxaemias = (CL. perfringens types A-E) - formed in intestine and absorbed into the blood (toxemia)
classification of the Clostridium species and their associated diseases:
1. Clostridium perfringens Type A
o Diseases:
- Histotoxic: Wound infections, Gangrenous Mastitis.
- Enterotoxemia: Food poisoning (humans).
classification of the Clostridium species and their associated diseases:
2. Clostridium perfringens Type B
o Diseases:
Lamb Dysentery, Enterotoxemia (calves, sheep, goats, foals)
classification of the Clostridium species and their associated diseases:
3. Clostridium perfringens Type C
o Diseases:
Enterotoxemia in sheep (“Struck”), calves, lambs, piglets
classification of the Clostridium species and their associated diseases:
4. Clostridium perfringens Type D
o Diseases:
Enterotoxemia (“Pulpy Kidney”) in sheep and goats
classification of the Clostridium species and their associated diseases:
classification of the Clostridium species and their associated diseases:
5. Clostridium septicum
o Diseases:
Malignant Edema (horses, cattle, sheep, swine), Gas gangrene, Braxy (sheep), Navel ill (lambs)
classification of the Clostridium species and their associated diseases:
6. Clostridium chauvoei
o Diseases:
Blackleg (cattle, sheep)
classification of the Clostridium species and their associated diseases:
7. Clostridium novyi Type A
o Diseases:
Gas gangrene (cattle, sheep), Bighead (rams
classification of the Clostridium species and their associated diseases:
8. Clostridium novyi Type B
o Diseases:
Black disease (Infectious Necrotic Hepatitis in sheep/cattle), sudden death (cattle)
classification of the Clostridium species and their associated diseases:
9. Clostridium novyi Type C
o Diseases:
Osteomyelitis (water buffalo)
classification of the Clostridium species and their associated diseases:
10. Clostridium haemolyticum (formerly C. novyi Type D)
o Diseases:
Bacillary Hemoglobinuria (cattle), Necrotic liver disease (sheep)
classification of the Clostridium species and their associated diseases:
11. Clostridium tetani
o Diseases:
Tetanus (all domestic animals and humans)
classification of the Clostridium species and their associated diseases:
12. Clostridium sordellii:
o Diseases:
Myositis, Fatal hepatitis (newborn lambs), Hemorrhagic enteritis (calves), Sudden death (young lambs)
Characteristic:
- Gram positive , anaerobic, rod shaped
- produce of exotoxin (local toxin such as blackleg), (systemic toxin such as black disease)
- An exotoxin is a toxin released by living bacteria into the body.

Prevention and control: مهم
- covexin 8 combined clostridial vaccine
- Killed vaccine ( not replicated vaccine )
- covexin 10 inactivated
