Q

What are the cold weather operations steps for apparatus with tanks?

A

Open the engine cooler valve, all discharge valves and caps, all intake valves
and caps, all drain and bleeder valves, and the master drain valve.

After draining the system, close all drains and bleeder valves, close the master drain valve, install all caps, and fill the pump with water. Open the tank-to-pump valve and tank recirculation or refill valve and leave them
open. Having both valves open will create thermal circulation with the warm water in the tank when responding emergent.

If a discharge valve or fitting leaks, notify fleet. It may only need a slight adjustment to correct the problem.

Check the “On Spot” chains for proper operation and periodically rinse the chains with warm water

Q

What can be done to prevent the caps from freezing?

A

A small
amount of WD-40 can be used to lubricate the caps and prevent
them from freezing. Please do not use white lithium grease as it
collects dirt and grime that causes the caps to bind.

Q

What is the purpose of draining the system in cold weather

A

This step will ensure the entire system is drained to prevent any
damage to lines and valves outside the pump house that could have
water trapped and frozen if not drained in the station

Q

What should happen when the apparatus arrives on scene during cold weather?

A

chock the unit, engage the fire pump, and
raise engine rpm to 1,000 rpm. This will supply warm water to circulate
through the pump while on scene.
