COM 1 Cytology week 4 Flashcards
What is each eye cushioned with
- Adipose tissue
What helps to focus the light in eyes
- Transparent tissues
Name the 3 main eye layers
- External fibrous layer
-Middle vascular layer
-Inner sensory layer
What does the external fibrous layer include
- Includes sclera and cornea
What does the middle vascular layer contain
- Choroid, ciliary body and iris
What is the inner sensory layer + function
- The retina, which connects to the the brain via the optic nerve
Explain the structure of lens
- Transparent, biconvex structure, held by zonular fibers
Explain the structure of the iris + function
- The pigmented part that surrounds the pupil
- Controls light entry
What is the aqueous humor
- Fluid in anterior and posterior chambers
What is the vitreous Body
- Gel like substance in the posterior vitreous chamber
Where is the vitreous body located
- Behind the lens
What week does the eye start to develop
4
Explain the development of the optic vesicles- What they form from, and what they develop into
- Form the forebrain and develop in optic cups and stalks
During the 4 week what does the surface ectoderm form
- Lens vesicle after intercting with the optic cups
What does the optic stalk become during the 4th week of development
-What supports the development of this
- The optic nerve
-hyaloid vessels
What does the mesenchyme form during the 4 th week
Outer layers and vitreous body
What does the retina develop from
- Optic cup and corneal epithelium from the surface ectoderm
What is the outermost layer of the eye
- External Fibrous layer
What portion does the sclera make up of the external fibrous layer
Posterior 5/6
What portion does the cornea make up of the external fibrous layer
- Anterior 1/6
Where do the sclera and cornea joint at
- Border called limbus
Explain the structure of the sclera
-White opaque part of the eye
What does the sclera provide/function
- Provides protection for inner structrues
-Attchemnet sites for extraocular muscles
What is sclera made out of
Dense connective tissue with type 1 collagen
