composite materials Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is a composite material?
A material made by combining two or more materials to create a new one with enhanced properties.
Name four common examples of composite materials.
Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP / Fibreglass)
Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP)
Concrete / Reinforced Concrete
Engineered wood (e.g., glulam)
What is concrete made from?
A mix of cement, sand, and aggregate (stone or gravel).
What is Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP)?
A plastic resin reinforced with fine glass fibres, forming a strong and lightweight composite.
How is GRP typically manufactured?
Gel coat is applied to the mould
Glass fibre mat is laid down
Polyester resin is applied and rolled
Layers are repeated until desired strength is reached
Cured and removed from the mould
What is the gel coat in GRP, and what is its purpose?
A mix of resin and pigment, used as the outer layer for smooth finish and colour.
What is Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP)?
A composite made from woven carbon fibre and a resin matrix like epoxy, known for being extremely strong yet lightweight.
Where is CFRP typically used?
In high-performance products like sports cars, bikes, aircraft, and racing equipment.
Why is CFRP more expensive than GRP?
Because of the precision manufacturing and higher cost of carbon fibre fabric.
What’s the difference in appearance between GRP and CFRP?
CFRP has a distinct grid pattern from woven carbon fibres, while GRP may have a random fibre texture.
