13
Q

what are the main differences of H and I beams?

A

H beams are heavier and can hold mroe force, H beams span longer than I, I beam is all one peice of steel whereas H is joined together

13
Q

what is blanking?

A

When the piece that has been punched out of the sheet is to be used, this is called a blank. the opposite where you use the sheet with the hole is called piercing.

14
Q

what is press forming?

A

bending malleable materials with a punch

15
Q

what are dies made out of and why?

A

die steel as it is tough enough to resist impact from the material being worked on

16
Q

advantages of sand casting

A

Complex 3D shapes can be produced
Its appropriate for small runs
Automated processes are suitable for longer production runs

17
Q

disadvantages of sand casting

A

Poor surface finish
Not as accurate as other methods
Only suitable for small production runs

18
Q

what is die casting?

A

injection moulding for metal with low melting points where the mould is called a die.

19
Q

advantages of die casting

A

smoother finish than sand casting
accurate and high detail
suitable for large scale production
low energy costs as metals have low melting point

20
Q

what are functional reasons for putting finishes on metals?

A

insulation, antibacterial, stain resistant, protection against attack from nature

21
Q

what are the different types of attacks from nature metals will need protection from?

A

Oxidation and corrosion

22
Q

what is drop forging?

A

metalworking process where heated metal is shaped using a hammer

23
what is welding?
a metal joining process which creates a circuit between the wire fed by the welding gun (anode) and the metal being welded (cathode) to create an arc of electricity and melt the metal being worked on so it can be joined to something else
24
what are pop rivets?
semi-permanent fixings between two sheets of metal
25
what is brazing?
a metal joining process where two or more metal parts are joined by melting a filler metal which creates a strong bond between them.
26
what is soldering?
a metal joining process which joins delicate peices like electricals or jewellery using a filler metal called solder
27
what is anodising?
a metal finishing process which can only be used on aluminium which gives it a shiny colour and improves its durability and hardness
28
what is electroplating?
a metal finishing process to improve the aesthetics of metal typically jewellery by allowing ions from anode to coat the cathode. it can also improve metals properties
29
what is metal hardening?
when a metal is cold worked and becomes harder due to the stress and distortion
30
what are examples of cold working processes?
bending, rolling, drawing, hammering
31
what is the impact of metal hardening?
the metal becomes harder but also more brittle
32
What is the purpose of heat treatment in metals?
To alter the properties of metals e.g. make them harder, stronger, more malleable
33
What is annealing and what does it do to a metal?
A heat treatment which softens the metal making it more ductile and malleable
