industrial production Flashcards
(24 cards)
What does QRM stand for?
Quick Response Manufacturing
What is the primary objective of QRM?
To respond rapidly to consumer demands
How is design and manufacture affected by QRM?
Compressed to beat competitors and gain a larger market share
What does FMS stand for?
Flexible Manufacturing Systems
How do Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) work?
Uses automation to efficiently produce different products by quickly adapting to changes in design or volume, minimizing downtime.
What are multi-functional tools used for in manufacturing?
Allow machines to switch from one product to another with little downtime
What triggers production in QRM?
Consumer demand
What is a disadvantage of vertical in house production?
potential lack of skills
what are characteristics of bespoke products?
- tailor made to specific needs
- made by highly skilled people
- made predominantly by hand
- high quality
- time consuming
examples of bespoke products
- suits and dresses
- artwork, ceramics and jewellery
- furniture
what is batch production?
medium scale of production where a certain amount is made in batches. 2-1000 units
what products are typically made in batches?
- newspapers, magazines, books
- most clothing
- food
- seasonal goods
what is mass production?
large scale of production where a high number of products need to be produced quickly and consistently. 2000+ units
what are the characteristics of mass production?
high levels of automation, high set up costs, high capital investment, suited to high and continuous product runs
what types of products are suited for mass production?
- packaging and containers
- food
- materials like timber
- paper
what processes are ideal for flexible manufacturing?
CNC and CAD/CAM processes are ideal for more flexible manufacturing while maintaining accuracy and efficiency.
what are bought-in components?
components which are manufactured in a different factory and can be bought by businesses
what is line production?
where each step follows another in a linear order/sequence. typically in large quantities e.g. cars
what is cell production?
production where each cell has a particular role and products are passed from cell to cell
what are standardised components?
where components are all a uniform size made to a common standard
what is vertical/in-house manufacturing?
All stages of production are done by the same company removing the need for externally sourced parts
what does JIT stand for?
Just In Time
what is just in time manufacturing?
a system created that ensures customers get products at the right time without manufacturers having to stockpile materials or components
what is the goal of just in time manufacturing?
to organise suppliers to deliver materials and components just in time for production
