modern/smart materials Flashcards
(6 cards)
What are smart materials?
Materials that change their properties in response to external stimuli such as temperature, light, pressure, or electricity.
Name three common types of smart materials.
Thermochromic pigments
Photochromic pigments
Shape memory alloys (SMAs)
What are thermochromic pigments?
Pigments that change colour in response to temperature changes.
Example: Mood rings
What are photochromic pigments?
Pigments that change colour when exposed to light, especially UV.
What is a shape memory alloy (SMA)?
A metal that can be deformed and then return to its original shape when heated. e.g. nitinol
What are modern materials?
Materials that have been developed recently through new processes, technologies, or scientific innovations to have improved or unique properties.
