Composites Flashcards
(10 cards)
what is a composite
when two or more materials are combined by bonding.
what is glass fiber made from
expoxy resin, reinforced by fine fibers of glass in a form of woven matting.
How is glass reinforced plastic made.
8 points….
1) mould is checked for defects
2) mould is polished using wax for a very smooth high quality finish
3) Liquid release agent is applied to inside of mold, to prevent glass fiber product from sticking.
4) Gel coat is applied to the mold and is left to cure and harden.
5) Layer of fiber glass reinforced material is mixed with polyster resin to form the second layer
6 composite materials.
1) glass reinforced plastic
2) Carbon Fiber
3) Medium density fiberboard
4) Hardboard
5) Chipboard
6)Plywood
GRP
Appilications
canoes, veichle bodies, fish ponds,
Advantages
- good strength to weight ratio
- resistant to corrosion and water
- easily repairable
Disadvantages
- expensive
- specialised manufacturing process
- high quality mould needed.
Carbon fiber
Applications
tennis raquets, bike frames, fishing rods
Advantages
- strength to weight ratio
- good tensile strength
- can be formed into complex structures
Disadvantages
- very expensive
- only available in black
- cannot be recycled easily
MDF
Applications
- flat pack furniture, joinery work, moulds
for forming
Advantages
- less expensive than natural timbers
- consistent strength in all directions
- no tendancy to split
Disadvantages
- heavier
- swells and breaks when waterlogged
- requires appropriate finishes
Hardboard
Applications
- furniture components, moulded door
skins
Advantages
- hardboards are specific to purpouse.
Disadvantages
- absorbs water
Chipboard
Applications
- fire doors, kitchen tops.
Advantages
- Durable
- looks like wood
- environmentally friendly
Disadvantages
- absorbs water
Plywood
Applications
- wall panelling, flooring and furniture.
Advantages
- strength and durability
- available in large sheets
Disadvantages
- suseptible to water damage if exposed to
leaks over time.
