What is milling ?
process of cutting away metal by feeding a peice of work past a rotating cutter.
What is Drilling
Process of making holes by using a rotating cutting tool that is either secured in either a hand operating drill or drilling machine.
What are flat bits used for ?
Drilling deep holes in wood
What are fostner bits used for ?
Drilling flat bottom holes in wood
What are auger bits used for ?
drilling deep holes using a brace
What are countersink bits used for ?
Drill angled sides for screws
What are hole saw bits used for ?
drill large diameter holes
What are tank cutter bits used for ?
drilling circular cutters for metals
what machine performes turning
Center lathe
what are the two processes a center lathe can perform ?
Facing off, and turning down.
What is center drilling ?
When a center lathe is used to drill a hole in the end of a rod or a bar.
What are screw threads ?
They can be cut by a center lathe, they are cut from a bar to produce the correct thread profile.
What is Knurling ?
Process conducted on a center lathe where, a pattern of straight, angles, or crossed lines is cut and rolled into a material to give it grip.
What is parting off ?
Cutting off a peice of work , by slicing a groove all the way through it using a special parting tool. Process is conducted on a center lathe.
What is stamping ?
A process where a flat sheet of metal is put into a stamping press where tool and die surface forms the metal into a net shape.

- blanking
- embossing
- bending
- flaging
