Metals Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is a Ferrous metal
Metal that consists mostly of iron and small amounts of other elements.
Mild steel
Ferrous metal
Ductile and malleable
Prone to rust
Used to make nuts, bolts, car bodies, gates
Carbon steel
Ferrous metal
1.5% carbon content
very strong and hard
Resistant to abrasion
Used to make, hand tools, garden tools, hammers.
Cast Iron
Ferrous metal
93% iron and 4% carbon
strong in compression
very brittle
used for , car breaks, vices, pillar drill bases
What is a non ferrous metal
Metals that do not have any iron in them. They are not attracted to magnets and they do not rust.
Aluminium
Non ferrous, light weight, malleable
used to make , sauce pans, cooking foil, window frames.
Copper
Non ferrous
Ductile and malleable
Red / brown in colour
very good conductor of heat + electricity
Used for, electric components, cookware, plumbing.
Zinc
Non ferrous
Resitant to corrosion
very weak
used for coatings and galvanising steel.
Tin
Non ferrous
very ductile and malleable
used for food cans and beer cans.
what is an alloy
substances that cantain two or more different metals and occasionally other elements.
stainless steel
alloy of iron with, 18% chromium, 8% nickle, 8% magnesium content.
- very resistant to wear and rust.
- used for kitchen appliances and cutlery.
Duralumin
alloy
- good strength to weight ratio
- very hard and tough
- can suffer from corrosion
- used for aircrafts, precision tools, engine
parts
Brass
alloy of 65% copper and 35% zinc.
- used for decorative metal work
- door handles, musical instrument
