what is conformity
Conformity - tendency to adjust one’s thoughts or feelings or behaviors in order to be more consistent with those of other people, groups or social norms.
what were the two main reason participants confirmed in Asch’s experiment about pressure to conform in group situations
to be part of the group and to avoid criticism or rejection
Q: How does group size affect conformity?
A: Conformity increases up to 4 confederates but levels off or even decreases beyond 15.
Q: What is unanimity and how does it affect conformity?
A: Complete agreement among group members; makes it harder to resist conforming. Having even one ally reduces conformity.
Q: What is informational influence?
A: Conforming due to a need for direction or the correct response in a situation. occurs when task is difficult or participant feels incompetent or unsure about being right
Q: What is normative influence?
A: Conforming to be liked, accepted, or to gain approval/praise by following social norms.
Q: What is social loafing?
A: The tendency to make less effort in a group than when working alone. They believe their individual effort has little impact on the group outcome.
Q: What is deindividuation?
The loss of individuality and sense of personal accountability in group situations.
This occurs because of a sense of Anonymity
and/or Shift in attention away from self
Q: What are the effects of deindividuation on behaviour?
A: People act more as part of a group and may behave in ways they wouldn’t as individuals, with less concern for consequences.
Q: What are two main ethical concerns in conformity studies like Asch’s on conformity ?
Deception – participants were misled about the true purpose.
Informed consent – participants did not fully consent due to lack of full information.
