what’s a stereotype
widely held preconceived judgment or belief on things or people because they are a member of a specific group

The idea that the initial impression we form of a person is more influential and lasting than later information.
what are benefits of stereotypes
stereotypes simplify and make perception more efficient and helps us make sense of the world and interactions
disadvantages of stereotypes
stereotypes ignore individuality, often inaccurate or based on inadequate info, resistant to change and can lead to social stigma
what are impacts of stereotypes on stigmatised groups
they may suffer social disadvantage, physical and/or psychological harm
whats an ingroup
a social group that an individual identifies with, often a majoirty group
whats an outgroup
a social group an individual does not identify with, often a minority group

what is cognitive dissonance
cognitive dissonance is a psychological state in which people don’t realise there is an inconsistency with their various beliefs or attitudes and behaviour
how do you reduce cognitive dissonance
justify or rationalise the inconsitency OR alter/adjust beliefs to match behaviour
prejudice
A negative attitude towards someone solely based on their group membership.
old fashioned prejudice
Overt and explicit prejudice, often based on stereotypes and involves segregation.
What is modern prejudice?

: Subtle and implicit prejudice that is socially acceptable (e.g., “I’m not racist but…”).
Q: What is the difference between prejudice and discrimination?
A: Prejudice is an attitude; discrimination is the behaviour that expresses it.
Q: What is direct discrimination?
A: Treating someone differently based on a characteristic (e.g., not hiring an outgroup member).
: What is indirect discrimination?
A: Treating everyone the same in a way that fails to accommodate the needs of certain groups.
