Q

what do neo-liberals overall believe that make them different to neo-conservatives?

A

they believe in the free-market and argue that in economic matters the state should do as little as possible. for example, they should tax as little as possible, privatise industries. some believe welfare state should even be privatised like healthcare and education and people should buy through free-market. so economic and welfare state should be limited as possible.

4
Q

what are the origins of new right?

A

reaction to ONC which began to stray away from conservative roots. they came to accept keynesian economics which put serious restraint on the free market and welfare state after the war. free market had been a long conserved economic ideology, and people began to agree with HAYES that the rise of authoritarianism/the state led to a reduction in personal liberties. keynesian no longer worked by 1970s due to rising inflation, unemployment, strikes.

6
Q

why do neo-liberals think individualism is the bets policy?

A

people should not rely on the state, or others to help them, as people are egotistical and selfish so when given the chance to be lazy they will accept this. the invention of the welfare state may encourage individuals not to work their hardest, and this will not be prosperous for all fo society. without it, people will have to rely on themselves, working harder and as a result all of society prospers. this is radical individualism

7
Q

why do neo-liberals strongly believe in the idea of self-reliance?

A

creating a system where everyone relies on their own efforts to succeed is morally good and will benefit the individual, by giving them self respect and a purpose.
smiles book argued that for individuals to succeed they need to help themselves by learning new skills, education and entering businesses. those who were best equipped would succeed and as a result society would be stronger overall.

Q

what are the beliefs a free market economy will do for neo-liberals

A

-low taxes as the incentive to work hard and gain financial rewards will be diminished if the outcome is taken.
-low public spending only to have police, courts and army
-entrepreneurship as private individualism investing their own money creates a vibrant economy to benefit all, as wealth in society is not created by the state, rather private businesses.
-social hierarchy, as economy is led by entrepreneurs so state should not impede to restrict freedoms
-free economic choice as you get to spend your money how you choose to so they are anti-collectivism and anti-statism as the state will promote free services thare not free and paid for by taxes
-private ownership, makes you more free as you are reliant on yourself, if you are reliant on others ex living in a state owned house then you are in a precarious position whereas homeowners spend time improving their property

11
Q

why are neo-liberals anti-collectivism and anti-statism

A

you have less choice as you are forced to pay tax and you don’t choose what you get in return for this, instead it is chosen by the state. ex: you are forced to pay for healthcare but not a specific type that can benefit from instead the NHS offers you what it can.
-due to public services there is no need or guarantee they will perform well. they are a monopoly under no pressure. whereas in the private sector there is competition so it will produce the highest quality at the cheapest price.

12
Q

what do neo-liberals believe about the welfare state

A

-sceptical as redistribution of wealth leads to diminished incentive to create healthy competition. poor people will not work if they are given aid, and rich will not invest as they receive little reward
-dependency culture created as welfare state provides a cradle to the grave, so there is no need to maintain yourself as the state will always help you if you can’t
-welfare state should be reduced in size. if it is privatised then individuals would pay less tax and rather small insurance and this would increase freedoms as they can choose what services they want. private sector would provide this at a high quality for a cheap price due to competition.

what do neo-cons think peoples attitudes shoulld be towards the state therefore?

A

-have respect for the authority of state institutions(police) have respect for figures of authority in society (parents) respect for institutions that make up (parliament)
-promote nationalism as this creates social cohesion, suggesting everyone has a common interest (onc agree)
-against multiculturalism as other societies may undermine respect for uk democracy law and order
-anti-permissive as it undermines traditional values
-negative vue on human nature as humans need a strong authoritarian state to make them behave. we are potentially violent and immoral and need a strong guiding hand

15
Q

anti-pemmisiveness is accepted by new right cons but onc disagree

A

this is as it allows behaviour that has been traditionally rejected to be allowed. like gay marriage, single mums, sex out of marriage. instead we should focus on maintaining traditional values, and return to a previous time were things were better (this is seen as somewhat reactionary)

Q

neo-cons support for traiditonal victorian family values, state, authority

A

-encourage familial structures with the father as head of authority
-traditional morality should be upheld and media should restrict anything that goes against this
-no welfare state so poor would remain poor if they had no initiative and would be underserving poor
-respect authority as its key to social cohesion
-tough law and order punishing small crimes to stop progression of more serious crimes, lack of respect would have young offenders sent to boot camps
-uk education should emphasise british history positively and interested in culture wars rejecting woke ideology

19
Q

what is rands heroic individualism

A

some people were nautral leaders and would achieve greatenss through private endeavours in the free markets when pursuing in their self interest

20
Q

why did rand like the free market and supported it

A

-allowed indivuals to pursue self interet as they are rational egoist allowing them to flourish
-rich had right to property making them better than others as
-even if ur not cut out to be rich the free market would allow you to find decent work with good wages and the free market’s gppds amd serbices will mean theyll be free too and as we are rational they’ll pursue their best self interest

21
Q

what sort of role did rand think the state should have?

minimal or maximal

A

-minimal approach protecting negative/ individual right by stopping cirminal behaviour which would undermine peoples life and property, also portect against foreign invasion

  • state is necessary so people ca agree on a set of rules and a power over them to prevent violence or theft, similar to hobbes who saw state as necessary for orderly society allowing a free economy, state should not be authortarian and should have a SOCIAL CONTRACT

state should do no more than this

22
Q

what did rand reject especially ideology wise

A

anarchism and libertarianism as the state had to exist to protect private property and individual freedom, a society without a state would end up in rule by gangs. neo cons agreed

communism and socialism stripped you of individualism as you’re forced to work for the good of everyone

23
Q

what did rand believe about state morality

A

should not enforce morality as long as you are not harming others do as you please

24
Q

what did rand think of the welfare state

A

opposed it due to self reliance being a virtue and believed it restricted freedoms of free market. this would have power over the individual by having a collective provision of goods. it was the enemy of individualism by promoting collectivism forcing people to conform to a system not to their choosing

25
why did rand reject altruism?
we do not have obligations toward others and this would destroy individualism sacrificing your own interest for the good of others. ex: she stated there's no duty to help the poor hence why she rejected a welfare state
26
so rands key ideas summed up are
-individualism in economic, moral matters -limited/minimal state only to insure individual rights and private property -free market capitalism -opposes collectivism -promotes rationality, egoistic rationality -heroic individualism - great men/women -radical capitalism - will set us free
27
what does rand have in common with neo-conservatives
state is necessary for a orderly society and a free market economy is not possible without it
28
what did nozick think about the state existing
shouldn't exist
29
what did nozick think about individualism
an individual own themselves and they can do whatever they want with their body and time even sell to into slavery as long as it's consensual
30
what minimal roles of the state did nozick believe in?
basic state that protects freedoms of life and proeprty is essential and anything else can be supplied bu the free market. state should also enforce the contracts people have entered into. therefore he is a minarchist (minimal state anarchist)
31
nozick view on society?
should not have a strong role, there's no morality that binds it together or standard of behaviour to adhere to just respect everyone's rights. unless if you form voluntary associations
32
nozick view of economy
free market would emerge naturally and no role for the state, money property and trade all emerge w out state. minimal state only emerges to protect private property from theft and ensure contracts are enforced
33
what did nozick think of state regulation and tax
tax is minimal and equivalent to ensalvement, tax should only exist for police and judicia system no state regulation for economy as economy will work
34
how did nozick view people
people were rational and moral beings and their decisions should not be overridden for the collective good
35
what do the new right believe about human nature neo-liberal vs neo-conservative
neo-lib: - humans are rational and capable of making informed decisions of their own lives -free market relies on pursuing self-interest, as they have their own bets interest -selfishness is natural, moral. rand's rational egoism, pursuing your own self interest -free choice is practical morally right neo-cons -humans are morally flawed beings -people need moral guidance and social discipline by the state -rand accepts minimal state ios needed to protect from violence and ensure rights so neo-libs believe we are rational, neo-cons are sceptical of human nature and call for state intervention to enforce morality
36
new right on the state neo-libs neo-cons
neo-libs -minimal state should just maintain stable economic environment. oppose state intervention, reject keynesian, like privatisation of welfare state etc, leave to individual choice neo-cons -strong state intervention to enforce law and order and uphold traditional moral values. free market cannot ensure social stability, so stater has to combat crime and promote traditional family structures
37
new right and society neo-libs neo-cons
neo-libs -atomists believe individuals should act independently, self-reliance and personal responsibilities are key to giving yourself purpose, ayn rand rejected altruism
38
new right and economy neo-libs neo-cons
new right tend to follow neo-lib policies of no state intervention for the free market however, they accept limits, like opposing free market for drgs, and believe state should intervene in monopolies to maintain competition
39
arguments new right is contradictory? -human nature
neo-libs are optimistic and believe we are rational egoist and are self reliant to get to achieve prosperous neocons are sceptical and think state should intervene to enforce strong moral guidance
40
arguments new right is contradictory ? -state
neo-libs believe in minimal state to protect free market neo-cons believe in strong authoritarian state to enforce law, order, morality
41
arguments new right is contradictory? -society
neo-libs believe in individualism and collectivism should not exist otherwise it undermines individualism as you are forced to conform to a system to help benefit others neo-cons believe social cohesion will be maintained through nationalism, tradition.
42
arguments new right is contradictory? -divison among thinkers
some neo-libs like nozick reject neo-con ideas and are strictly neo-lib? expand on this later im confused
43
arguments that new right is not contradictory? -economic policies/ideologies between neo-cons and neo-libs
-neo cons believe in a strong state to enforce social order needed rfor a free market to function effectively -neolibs believe a state is needed to enforce stability but not economically interveme, just to control counterproductiveness like trade unions
44
arguments new right is not contradictory? human nature neo-cons and libs
-neo cons- people can act potentially immoraly without guidance -neo-libs people can act rationally to pursue self intefest within a stable moral society
45
argumennts new right is not contradictory ? social cohesion
naitonalism and shared values from neo-cons provide trust necessary for free-market transations for neo-libs
